The affected items include wind turbines, mobile cranes, household appliances, bulldozers, heavy machinery, railcars, motorcycles, marine engines, furniture, and hundreds of other goods.
Research firm Evercore ISI noted that the measure covers over 400 product codes, representing more than $200 billion in imports last year, and estimated it will raise the overall effective tariff rate by about 1%.
The Commerce Department also added imported components for automotive exhaust systems, electrical steel used in electric vehicles, as well as parts for buses, air conditioners, and household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and dryers to the tariff list.
A coalition of foreign car manufacturers urged the Commerce Department to exclude certain components, arguing that the US lacks sufficient domestic production capacity to meet current demand.
“This action broadens the scope of steel and aluminum tariffs and closes loopholes, supporting a sustainable recovery of the US steel and aluminum industries,” said Jeffrey Kessler, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security.
The White House has not yet clarified whether these new tariffs will be added on top of the country-specific duties already announced by President Donald Trump.
